Papermaking begins following the chemical breakdown of fibrous plant components with a suspension consisting of cellulose fibres, glue and mineral fillers, which is often made up of more than 99 % water in the starting state. In industrial plants, this water is separated from the solids mostly by means of a rotating screen. In this part of the plant, the components are exposed to high mechanical stresses. To guarantee cost-effective operation, the use of high-quality ceramic materials is a logical option for positions where components are exposed to high abrasive stresses.

Depending on the specific operating conditions, today machine and plant components made of high-purity, dense-sintered oxide and non-oxide ceramic materials, such as Al2O3, ZrO2, and mixed ceramics from the two oxides, as well as Si3N4 and SiC, are used.

Components made of these materials have proven effective as components for many years. Their performance profile can be optimized to withstand specific stresses based on appropriate adjustment of the ceramic microstructure.
